From Springshare:

Starting on March 11, Springshare is updating several sites.

The Ask (documentation) site will be behind a login, so you will need to log into your account before accessing the documentation, Springboards, or the form to submit questions to support. We will have ways to share key information with your IT colleagues who may need to understand a particular process (e.g., LibAuth setup), but may not have accounts in your system in order to access it.

Live Training webinars will require a login when you register. You can still access the site to see upcoming events without logging in, but you will need to log in to register for a webinar.

The Springshare Lounge will automatically create accounts for all Springshare customers. No need to register for a new account before sharing your idea, asking your question, helping another customer, adding your feature request, or simply reading release notes.

We've been getting a number of reference questions about a particular chemistry assignment, so I wanted to share some resources that will be of use to students in that class, and to you if you're working with one of these students.

The Merck Index is an encyclopedia of drugs, chemicals, and other stuff ("botanicals") and is mentioned as a source in the assignment. I can't recall if it's required or just suggested. SSU has the most recent print copy in our tiny little reference section as well as a couple other useful reference books, down at the end of the LPs: https://csu-sonoma.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01CALS_SOL/12mrlk1/alma991000444109702921.

Meanwhile, the research guide for Chemistry has some other sources that might be useful, some in print and some online: https://libguides.sonoma.edu/c.php?g=202656&p=1336768. Specifically, https://hbcp.chemnetbase.com replicates the content of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, which is no longer published, and PubChem is the National Library of Medicine's chemistry information portal: https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/.

I hope this is helpful if any further questions come to the desks. Please let me know if you run across a question that these resources won't meet.

All my best,
Rita

You might have heard that the bookstore has changed the way that they provide books to students. Starting Fall 2023, Sonoma State students are automatically enrolled in the bookstore's Seawolf Bundle program. Seawolf Bundle charges students $18.50/credit hour they are registered for ($277 for a 15-credit load). In exchange, students are provided access to all the textbooks that were assigned to their registered courses.

If students would like to get their books elsewhere (e.g. by purchasing their own copies/borrowing from the library/using course reserves), they have the option to opt out of the Seawolf Bundle through B&N's website.

I have a sneaking suspicion that not too many students are aware that they have been automatically opted into this program, and might come to the library seeing if they can borrow a required textbook for the semester. If you do get a sense students are asking about access to a required course reading, I would encourage ya'll to provide them with information about the bookstore's new program.

On August 18, 2-4 PM the library will be hosting Love Your Library, an open house event for new and returning Sonoma State Students.

During the open house, students are invited to explore the Jean & Charles Schulz Information Center, learn about services available to them throughout the building, and meet faculty and staff that will support their success at SSU.

From 2 - 4 PM, students who enter the building will receive a Love Your Library stamp book. Students are then encouraged to visit six distinct locations in the library to learn about distinct offerings/services that location can provide.

The locations are:

  • LARC
  • CAASE
  • Advising & Transfer Center
  • Research Help
  • Makerspace
  • Special Collections

Locations are encouraged to provide an interactive element for students to learn about the services they provide. Once they do visit the location, and learn more about the service offered, locations will stamp the students’ stamp book. Students that receive all six stamps and answer the stamp books questions are invited to turn in their completed passport for a chance to win a door prize.

Door prizes include:

  • Beats Headphones
  • Trader Joe's Gift Basket
  • Crafty Gift Basket
  • Seawolf Pride Gift Basket

New and incoming Sonoma State Students are participating in Orientation Tuesday, August 15 - Saturday, August 19. Information about orientation events is available on SSU's Orientation Website.

Throughout the week, folks might be wandering into the library to explore the space. Please be welcoming, and provide information about library spaces and services to all those that ask.
