The 1619 Project

Read the sources used to write The 1619 Project, SSU's 2025 Common Read.

Introduction

The Research Guide is being created to pull together the vast number of sources used to produce The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story. The 1619 Project was created by Nikole Hannah-Jones, and includes the work of over a dozen scholars and journalists who paint a rich and well-researched picture of race relations in the United States and the ways they have shaped the country from the very earliest days.

Scholarship like this draws on the work of hundreds of other researchers, journalists, archivists, and writers. This guide provides links to the work that was used to inform each chapter of The 1619 Project, illustrating the way that thought and scholarship is a continual building on the work of others and on the historical record.

This guide is a work in progress, and additional chapters will be added as they are completed.
