California Bills

The Assembly and the Senate each have a series of bills that are numbered in separate series for that state house, and keep their numbers as they travel through both sessions.

Citation Examples for a California Bill:

  • AB 517 Hall [Assembly Bill #517, authored by Hall]
  • SB 252 [Senate Bill #252]

Where to Find:

Federal Bills

Each house has a series of bills that are numbered in separate series for that house, and keep their numbers as they travel through both sessions of Congress.

Citation Example for a Federal Bill:

  • H.R. 2967  [Bill 2967 originating in the House of Representatives.]
  • S. 1285   [Bill 1285 originating in the Senate.]

If bills originating in either house have similar content and purpose, one bill is merged into the other in order to simplify the process.

  1. The bill number is H.R2967.
  2. The identical bill, S.1285 is the bill carried forward for approval to law.
  3. When it became a public law, the public law number is 109-101.
  4. The corresponding statute is 119 STAT. 2171.
